Kalamoir Park - Gap A

Trail Section Description:   This trail is made up of sections of paved secondary road, dirt path with exposed bedrock and tree roots, wood boardwalk, gravel pathway and dirt road or sandy trail. While all of it is hike-able, parts through Kalamoir Park require a more athletic and skilled cyclist at this time. Please give way to hikers! The proposed section through the Quails Gate Vineyard is not a public trail and is private property.

Kalamoir Park is a scenic location, partially wooded, partially open with multiple trails crossing from north to south.  The Waterfront trail is largely cyclable, follows the water at low elevation and leads to several small beaches.  The Sunnyside trail  has a lot of small steep hills, is narrow in spots and has rough terrain. Best to walk your bike through these bits!

Directions:   From the north, one can cross from Kelowna over the Bennett Bridge, turn left onto Campbell road from the round-about, which then becomes Benedick Road.   At the end there is a small cul-de-sac with a sign for the trail head into Kalamoir Park.  Follow the path which becomes the Waterfront Trail and at the end take the Sunnyside Trail up the hill.  At the south end of Kalamoir, travel down Sunnyside road and onto Sunnybrae to find the gate to Quails Gate Vineyard.  The south end is accessed via Green Bay Road.

Our Actions:  The West Kelowna Trails are largely looked after by the Gellatly Bay Trails and Parks Society.  They have been active for over 20 years and were the first advocates for Trail 2000 – a continuous trail near the waterfront including through Kalamoir Park.  The route through Kalamoir Park was also identified as a cycle route in the recent RDCO Sustainable Transportation Plan.  The Trail of the Okanagans Society advocated for this route to be completed as a priority as it is part of an inter-community route. The Trail of the Okanagans has met with the Westbank First Nation, Regional District of the Central Okanagan, and West Kelowna, advocating for a linked trail built to an all ages all abilities standard. In the fall of 2021 the Westbank First Nation has added a walking and cycling path to the Campbell Road section.
